Marine police solve 17,700 cases, seize RM477m goods
Semporna: The Marine Police Force (PPM) have solved 17,700 cases involving confiscation of goods worth more than RM477 million over five years from 2014 until October this year.Director of Internal Security and Public Order Datuk Seri Acryl Sani Abdullah Sani said this was despite the fact that the PPM needed more staff and security assets.

"We believe that if the PPM was boosted and strengthened, the work will be more effective in ensuring our waters and territories, including in Sabah, are under control and any criminal elements curbed," he said.

Acryl Sani was speaking to reporters here Friday during his two-day official visit to Sabah, which began on Thursday.

He added that the increase in assets such as boats and detectors were among the equipment needed by the PPM in its fight against crime.

"Now, they (criminals) are also using assets (arms) and that is why we (PPM) need to be two or three steps ahead of them to fight the criminal activities," he said.

Meanwhile, Bukit Aman PPM Commander SAC Mohd Yussof Mamat said Sabah PPM Region 4 recorded the highest number of arrests in the whole country between 2014 and October this year, with 6,591 cases and a total confiscation value of RM84.9 million.

"For the 10 months this year alone, there were 1,216 arrests recorded in Sabah with the total confiscation value of RM16.2 million," he said.

He said the highest number of cases involved the Forestry Act (596 cases), Fisheries Act (202) and the Immigration Act (149).

He also said he would ensure that the division would not merge with other agencies.

Towards this end, he urged marine police personnel to continue to carry out their duties even though there was an issue of overlapping powers with the Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA).

"Each personnel must put great emphasis on discipline," he said, and reminded them on the division's motto "There is No Day without Success."

"This motto should become a motivator to safeguard our waters from any negative elements," he said.

Earlier, Mohd Yussof witnessed the handing-over-of-duties to the new Sabah PPM Region 4 Commander ACP Mohd Pajeri Ali who takes over from Supt Abd Nasir Othman.
