KOTA KINABALU: A vacation turned tragic for three friends from China when one of them, a 26-year-old woman, drowned at Pulau Mengalum, an island off Kota Belud, Monday.
Chen Shao Ling, from Guangdong, was pronounced dead by paramedics at about 1.05pm, not long after a tour guide and a boatman tried to revive her on the island.

City Police Chief ACP Habibi Majinji in a statement, Tuesday, said early investigations showed that the woman arrived in the city with two friends, aged 28 and 29, on Jan. 5.
They boarded a catamaran at a resort’s jetty here and headed for the island at about 8.30am on Jan. 7.
Initial findings showed that they were given a safety briefing at about 10am before going out for their sea recreational activity.
The sea condition was said to be choppy and windy when the victim was seen choking in water at about 12.36pm, prompting the tour guide to pull her up to shore where together with help from the boatman applied cardiopulmonary resuscitation to revive her.

Her unresponsive state prompted them to rush her to back to the resort’s jetty where paramedics pronounced her dead at about 1.05pm.
Habibi said they received information from the resort’s security guard via MERS 999 at about 1.15pm.

The remains were sent to the Queen Elizabeth Hospital 1 for post mortem. Several cases were also reported last year.
Among them was a 73-year-old tourist, also from China, who died hours after being pulled to safety by a lifeguard who saw him struggling in shallow waters off Pulau Mamutik, in 2016.
