Agency steps up war on the fish bombers

Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian Maritime Enforcement Agency (MMEA) is targeting zero fish bombings in Sabah coastal waters.In a statement, here, Thursday, MMEA Commander for Sabah and Labuan, First Admiral Ahmad Puzi AB Kahar said the agency is waging all-out action against the culprits."We are sparing no stone unturned to eradicate this dangerous activity by irresponsible people," he said in a meeting with fishermen at Kampung Kuala Abai, Kota Belud, last Saturday.

He said the MMEA would be launching covert operations to ensure Sabah waters are free from such unscrupulous acts including encroachments into designated restricted zones such as around offshore oil platforms near Mantanani.Nevertheless, he hoped local fishermen would assist the agency to ensure safety and sustainability of the marine resources by becoming the eyes and ears of MMEA.By reporting incidents or intrusions to them, he said it would make the waters more safe and marine resources more sustainable.The security awareness session was a continuation of an on-going concerted drive between the MMEA, Kota Belud District Office and Shell Malaysia with the main objective to disseminate up-to-date information on maritime laws.

It is also to create awareness on the dangers of fish bombings, including encroachments. Ahmad said because of cooperation from the fishermen, the number of fish bombings have been reduced.Also present were Kota Belud District Officer, Mohd Najib Muntok and Shell Malaysia Exploration and Production General Manager, George Ling.
