Kudat: A Filipino was fatally maimed by a saltwater crocodile while diving for fish and abalone at Balambangan Island, about an hour's boatride from here late Tuesday.Jeneston Jadson Aro, a 29-year-old Visaya, was swimming with about 15 other friends when he was yanked by what the friends described as "a massive crocodile" by the head.

They were about one kilometre from the island when the incident occurred at about 10.30pm.

District Police Chief, DSP Dawi Ossen, however, said the friends could not estimate the size of the reptile due to the dark but pointed out "they were pretty sure they had seen a figure of a crocodile."

Despite being confused and not knowing if there were also in danger of being gnawed by other crocodiles, the friends gathered their courage and managed to pull Jeneston away from the jaws of the crocodile.

"They quickly dragged him over the water to the boat, in which they found him unconscious," he said, adding the man was confirmed dead on reaching the district hospital.

An autopsy later found a wound of about three inches deep in his head, he said, adding the remains have been claimed by family members for burial at Kg Gumpa here.

Dawi said the police have informed the Wildlife Department about the matter and requested them to monitor and assess the situation at the island.
