10 most outstanding are honoured
Kota Kinabalu: Winnners of 10 JCI Outstanding Young Persons of Sabah 2009 were named at a gala dinner Saturday.Kota Belud-born Datuk Rosnah Bte Hj Abd Rashid Shirlin who is also Deputy Health Minister took the award for the Political, Legal and Government Affairs Category.

The former St Agnes and St Francis Convent student who went on to become a lawyer, Member of Parliament for Papar and Puteri Umno chief.

In her acceptance speech, Rosnah said nothing has been easy nor as glamorous as people imagine but support of friends and family saw things through.

Another Kota Belud born lad and rising star as a Taiwan-based singer, Gary Chaw Pak Haw, won the Cultural & Artistic Achievement award. His received it on his behalf.

Tan Kar Leong, 32, who started a bicycle and household products business in Brunei and later expanded into a group business with 114 outlets including six supermarkets in three states, took the Business, Economic or Entrepreneurial Accomplishment Award.

Dental surgeon Chia Ming Shen, 38, lifted the Humanitarian and Voluntary Services Category award. Married to Dr Cecilia Chong, a family physician, Dr Chia is also Chairman of the Board of Directors of the Rafflesia Medical Centre, Sabah's third private Hospital.

Ben Leong, an amateur golfer turned pro in 2006 received the Personal Improvement and Accomplishment Award. His father received it on his behalf.

The Moral and religious Leadership category award went to young pastor Kevin Loo Seng Pung who started as a youth worker at St Patrick's Church , Tawau and whose City Harvest Church in Kuala Lumpur has been seeing substantial growth.

Mobile phone technology wizard, Calvin Tang Kiat Chung, an ex-Tshung Tsin School student, clinched the Scientific and Technological Development Category award. Calvin's pre-teen interest around research especially after mobile phone virus outbreaks eventually caught the attention of leading US-based anti-virus company named McAfee which offered him a permanent part-time job as professional security researcher.

Steven Liau Chee Kok, the current Vice Youth Head of the Hokkien Association Kota Kinabalu, was recipient of the Contribution to Children, World Peace, Nature or Human Rights category award.

Beasides the above 'Honourees' of TOYPS, two others received a Certificate of Merit each.

They were the sixth season Akademic Fantasia winner Starcie Angie Anam @Stacy, a former St Michael's Secondary School, Penampang.

Lastly, the Merit Certificate in the Academic Leadership & Accomplishment went to Ms Mak Ching Hsia, now a first year medical student at Manipal University, India, under a fully sponsored scholarship, Public Service Department, Prime Minister's Department.

She represented Sabah twice at Sukma Games and scored straight As in every public examination, from UPSR to PMR to SPM.

The Outstanding Young Person of Sabah (TOYPS) is an award organized by the Junior Chamber of Kota Kinabalu (JCI, KK) where JC Vivian Lee is Chapter President 2009.

TOYPS was initiated in 2007 to recognise young Sabahan and Malaysian individuals in Malaysia who have dedicated themselves to the progress or welfare of the community at large.

"There are many young Sabahans and Malaysian individuals who have excelled in their respective fields and professions, some known by the public, others in obscurity. Our purpose is to recongnise these groups of individuals as a form of social responsibility to our community," Vivian explained.

Some of these, such as Datuk Raymond Chan and Adrian Lasimbang, had gone on to win the 2008 Ten Outstanding Young Malaysian Honouree Awards , Vivian cited.

"It is very crucial for us to recognise all who have excellent and outstanding achievement in their field , creating public awareness and inspiring more young Sabahans to greater heights with selfless dedication for the development of the community," said JC Paul Hen, National Executive Vice President, 2009.

JCI Senator, Ms Jamie Tiew, National President 2009, JCI Malaysia, said: "The programme (open to persons aged 18-40) is in line with our new vision - to be the leading global network of young active citizens and our new mission - the provide development opportunities that empower young people to create positive change," Ms Tiew said.

She said JCI Malaysia being "a leading youth organisation in Malaysia in leadership and entrepreneurship," will continue to foster national unity and plays its role in the Prime Minister's call for a One Malaysia.

Guest of Honor for the night was deputy Chief Minister cum Minister of Youth and Sports , Datuk Peter Pang En Yin, who was represented by his Assistant Minister, Datuk Jahid Jahim.

Datuk Pang was the Chief of a panel of judges that included well known business and women leader in Sabah, Datuk Nancy Ho, Tan Kim Beng, a Chartered Accountant, James Sarda, Chief Editor of Daily Express, Carl Moosom, a UK trained civil engineer, Michael Imban, Permanent Secretary to the Ministry of Youth & Sports and Dr Rosnah Ismail, deputy Vice Chancellor , Research and Innovation and Psychology Professor at the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) while JC Benjamin Lo was the programme's Organising Chairman.
