Kota Kinabalu: Students sponsored by Sabah Foundation to further their secondary school studies have been urged to study hard and give back to society.Sabah Foundation Director Tan Sri Khalil Jamalul hopes all the 56 students chosen to be sent to Peninsular Malaysia (40) and Sarawak (16), Monday, will make full use of the scholarship.

"We hope students who will be going there for a five-year study term (Form 1-5) would come back here equipped with knowledge, good personality and high moral value," he said.

He said this during a meet-the-students event held at the Tun Hamdan Theatre at Menara Tun Mustapha.

He said since the programme to send students to Peninsular Malaysia began in 1968, a total of RM54 million has been spent for a total of 5,022 students.

"The programme to send students here to Sarawak, and to sponsor Sarawak students to study here, however, only started in 1976," Khalil pointed out.

This programme, he said, had cultivated very successful individuals, some of whom are lawyers, community leaders, administrators and entrepreneurs.

"The most recent success was seen in the 2010 PMR examination where we had a total of 44 students getting seven and 9As, three students getting 6As and one who obtained 4As."

Hence, this new batch of students who come from the more rural areas of the State are advised to make this accomplishment their motivation to do as good, if not better, he said.

"Parents must also continue to give their children all the support and love they need so they would not feel neglected," Khalil added.

Meanwhile, a total of 13 students from Sarawak have also been accepted to study in different schools here.

Sarawak Foundation Director Mohammad Abu Bakar Marzuki, meanwhile, advised parents here not to be afraid to let their children go as they would be placed in good hands upon arrival in Sarawak.

"Do not be afraid or too concerned, because we are not a land of headhunters," he joked.

He added that a memorandum of understanding had also been signed with the Education Ministry to enable a one to two-year student exchange study term for students.

"There are some parents who can't bear to let go off their children for five years, so we have come up with the plan to let Form Four students follow this programme and allow them to complete their Form Five through the programme," he said.

Hopefully, if all goes as planned, Mohammad said the programme would be carried out next year.

Meanwhile, Faizuddin Ibrahim from SK Bedup, Miri is excited to be in Sabah for the first time.

"I am happy to be here as the people are nice, and I can understand the language people use here," he said.

The last sibling among nine in his family pledged to do his best in his studies so as to make his parents who are farmers, proud.

Likewise, Azlan Nizam Ismail who would be going to Sarawak said he would also do his best and get great results so that he could follow his elder brother's footsteps and go on to university in the future.

"I am nervous to be going to a 'foreign' place as I do not know the way of life and the language there, but it would not stop me from doing my best and make many friends," he said.

The 12-year old from SK Kampong Libang, Ranau said he felt sad to be leaving his family for five years, but hopes to be strong and to make them proud too.

Another, Nurashikin Suradi, of SK Batu 61/2, Segama, Lahad Datu, who would be sent to SBP (1) Gombak, stated that she is happy and not at all nervous about going to another state.

The fourth among six siblings in her family said she would make use of the opportunity given to her and be among the top students in her new school.

"I want to study properly and although I come from Sabah, I hope people there (peninsula) would accept us and be friends with us," she said.

She is confident that she will do well as she achieved 4As and 1B in her UPSR examination last year.
