Tawau: The setting up of the Voluntary Patrol System (VPS) at Matahir village here will further enhance rapport between the public and the police.Infrastructure Development Assistant Minister and Merotai Assemblyman, Pang Yuk Ming, said the VPS, the first in the district, was an exemplary measure to complement the police's effort in combating crime.

"The VPS is equipped with its own sentry post hut to do policing job," he said at its launching, recently.

District Police Chief, ACP Ibrahim Chin, said the village would become a role model for the other villages to set up their own VPS.

"Such policing will also be implemented in housing estates and urban areas as we all strive towards sharing information for a better security."

Ibrahim also said the negative perception of the public towards the police could be easily overcome if the public understood the duties of the police.

"It is a two-way co-operation. We need information to do our job, thus, the public need to assist us and not just expect us to do the job," he said.
