Kota Kinabalu: Sabah DAP on Tuesday reminded the authorities to regularly inspect public areas that pose danger to the public. Its branch chairman, Stephen Jimbangan, said a jogger recently injured his leg and sustained scratches on his body after he fell into a hole on the roadside at the Jalan Nosoob junction near Oriental Park.

He said the jogger apparently did not see the deep hole because it was covered with long grass and was only able to get out after a young girl helped him.

Friends of the jogger living nearby later brought him to the hospital for treatment.

Stephen said the incident happened on Sept 6 and that the victim after recuperating met him and Kota Kinabalu MP Hiew King Cheu last Sunday to highlight the case to them.

The jogger, M. Guvalakrisnan, a contractor, said it was very unfortunate that the deep hole was left gaping by the authorities as if waiting for someone to fall into it.

He said he was lucky that only one leg went into the hole, but that if both legs went in, he could have sustained more injuries.

According to him, it is difficult for him to walk now and that he could not go to work until today.

Not only that, he also incurred hefty bills for his medical treatments.

Hiew and Stephen said the three-foot deep hole at the roadside is a potential trap to passers-by.

"The hole is actually not noticeable especially when you are jogging along the road with cars coming from behind," they said.

Had Guvalakrisnan fall on the road instead of the road shoulder, Stephen said he would have sustained more injuries if a passing car hit him.

In cases like this, he said the authorities should be liable and held responsible.

Hiew recommended the victim for taking up the case with the relevant authorities and file a claim for compensation from the authorities concerned.

The authorities, he said, should have insured under "Public Liabilities" to protect people from their mistakes.

In Penampang, especially in Kapayan area, he said there are many places that need immediate attention from the City Hall and Penampang District Council.

He said he doesn't mind to lead the authorities to the sites any time they want.

However, he said once they have identified the site, they must rectify the problems.
