Kuala Lumpur: The Malaysia Weightlifting Federation (MWF) will not compromise on the punishment meted out to a weightlifter who failed the doping test at the recent SEA Games in Indonesia. Its president, Zafarul Akbar Kassim said he would head the association's investigation team on the positive dope test result of sample A, carried out by Indonesian SEA Games Organising Committee (INASOC).
"We will be firm. Should the athlete be found involved in drug abuse he will be punished and suspended.
"In fact, should there be proof of the coach's involvement, we will not hesitate to terminate his contract," he told Bernama when met at Wisma OCM here Thursday.
Since the result of the B sample would only be known next week, he declined to identify the weightlifter involved.
Zafarul said MWF would not mete out any punishment before the confirmation of the final result and hoped the B sample result would be favourable to the athlete concerned.
He added that the weightlifter would be given an opportunity to defend himself if required. - Bernama
