Kota Kinabalu: Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak has assured Upko President Tan Sri Bernard Dompok that the RCI issue will be dicussed at the Cabinet meeting this week.Dompok, who is Minister of Plantation Industries and Commodities, said he had raised the demands of Sabahans for the setting up of the Royal Commission of Inquiry on illegal immigrants when he met with Najib on Jan. 30. Dompok said he had already briefed and explained to the Prime Minister that there must be an ultimate solution to settle this longstanding issue.
"Recently I received an opportunity to discuss with the Prime Minister about the illegal immigrant issue which has plagued Sabah for so long and the demands of Sabahans for the setting up of a RCI which has been supported by all in the State including BN component parties, opposition parties and people from all layers of society.
"What I said to the Prime Minister was that there is a need to bring to closure this big issue and debate about the presence of illegal immigrants in the State and I said to him there must be a solution and he agreed that this will be discussed at the next Cabinet meeting.
"I met him on Jan. 30 which was a Monday. On Wednesday there should have been a meeting but because it was a Federal Territory public holiday at Putrajaya, there was no meeting on Wednesday but the next meeting on Feb 8, the issue will be brought before the Cabinet.
"I am confident that we in Sabah will see a move on this by the Federal Government and all Federal agencies to set up the RCI."
He was speaking at the Kepayan Low Cost Housing Association Chinese New Year cum Senior Citizen Celebrations at Grand Port View Restaurant, Saturday.
