Cannabis: Three women and man may face death

Kota Kinabalu: A local man and three foreign women without passports may face death penalty for suspected possession of cannabis, weighing about 661.31 grammes, here.City Police Deputy Chief Supt. M. Chandra said the suspects aged between 18 and 39 were arrested during a police raid on a house along Jalan Tuaran on Feb 12.

He said the local and one of the women are a couple while the other two women are their friends staying in the house.

"Acting on a tip-off, police raided the house at 5am and found the drug believed to be cannabis in the house.

"Preliminary investigation showed the market price for the cannabis is about RM3,500," he said.

Chandra said the investigation also showed that only the man is involved in drug addiction based on his urine test that was positive.

The case is being investigated under Section 39B of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952, which carries death penalty on conviction.

The suspects are also being investigated under Section 6 of the same Act for possession of the suspected cannabis, and Section 15(1(a) of the same Act for taking drug.

Under "Ops Tapis" aimed to clean up Kg Air here, Chandra said a total of 288 people were hauled up in the on-going operation that started on Jan 5 till Feb 16.

Of the 288, he said 78 people comprising 66 men and 12 women were booked for consuming drugs based on their urine tests which were positive.

Among the women arrested, he said, 80 per cent of them were prostitutes who were mostly locals and 20 per cent of the 66 men were patrons of the vice activities.

In addition, Chandra said four suspects have been investigated under Section 12(1) of the Dangerous Drugs Act 1952 for possession of Syabu and one case for possessing cannabis under Section 6 of the same Act.

In another ongoing operation dubbed as "Ops Poket Bersepadu", which started on Feb 7 until Feb 15, a total of 423 people were inspected, he said.

Of the figure, 17 illegal immigrants were arrested in the City here.

A local drug addict and 1,163 packs of contraband cigarettes were also seized in the operation.

Chandra said 16 foreign men and one woman were found not possessing any personal identification documents.

To a question, Chandra said all the cigarette peddlers ran away and left their contraband when seeing the enforcement authorities carrying out the integrated operation.

He said the joint operation also involved personnel from the Civil Defence Department (JPAM), City Hall, Immigration and Special Task Force.
