Second stranded dolphin dies

Kota Kinabalu: The injured female dolphin found stranded in Sepanggar Bay here on Feb 15 succumbed to its injuries on Monday.Universiti Malaysia Sabah's (UMS) Borneo Marine Institute Director, Prof. Dr. Saleem Mustafa said the dolphin could not be saved despite efforts by staff and students of the institute as well as staff from the Wildlife Department. "It is sad to see another mammal die on our shores, the last one being a 15.8m long whale that died 12 hours after it was washed ashore in Kuala Penyu on Aug 1 last year," he said. ADVERTISEMENT The DNA analysis, he said, would be carried out by two of the institute's staff Dr. Julian Ransangan and Dr. John Maidin for accurate identification of species and other information that could be of interest in conservation of the dolphin populations. The Delphinidae dolphin was found stranded in Sepanggar Bay and brought back to UMS on Feb 16 where it reported to have not been accepting food and in poor condition on Feb 23. It was described as appearing to be disoriented, with open wounds on many places of its body which were infected, with its skin peeling off around the fin margins.
