Langkawi: The RMAF will upgrade the weaponry system of its aircraft, including improving its laser-guided weapons and global positioning systems in light of the terrorist attacks in Lahad Datu, says RMAF chief Jen Tan Sri Rodzali Daud.He said the improvements had always been on the RMAF agenda.

"Due to the Lahad Datu incident, there is the urgency to upgrade our weaponry to carry out precision attacks and bombings," he said during the Langkawi International Maritime and Aerospace Exhibition (Lima) 2013 here.

He was responding to a question on whether the RMAF would upgrade its weapons after armed foreign militants entered Lahad Datu.

During the security operations in the area, the RMAF sent out its FA-18 and Hawk fighter jets to bomb the hideouts of the militants on March 5.

On another matter, Jen Rodzali said four Airbus A400M airlifter aircraft, which were ordered by Malaysia in 2005, are scheduled to be delivered by January 2015.

"I hope the aircraft can be delivered in time for Lima 2015," he added.

The Government had signed a memorandum of understanding for the procurement of the four aircraft with manufacturer Airbus Military.

The Airbus is expected to be used for tactical airlifts, long-range strategic logistic airlifts as well as air-to-air refuelling.

Jen Rodzali also said that the RMAF was discussing with the Russian air force on the upgrade of the Sukhoi SU-30MKM jet fighters and training programmes for its pilots.

The RMAF has a fleet of 18 Sukhois specially tailored for Malaysia.

They were ordered to replace the F-5E jets and complement the RMAF's MiG-29N aircraft.
