Kuching: Telekom Malaysia (TM) aims to expand in phases the coverage of its UniFi high speed broadband service using fibre optics in the state, including to the Sarawak Renewable Corridor of Energy (Score), its Sarawak General Manager Sarbini Hamdan said Tuesday. So far, there are 18,000 residence and business subscribers in Sarawak, with 22 per cent utilisation of TM's latest products spread out in Kuching, Miri, Sibu and Bintulu, he said.
"I am very excited for Sarawak small and medium enterprises (SMEs) because of the positive response received, with UniFi coverage to be expanded phase by phase depending on the places and right timing," he told reporters after the launching of the Sarawak leg of the TM SME BizFest by State Minister for Tourism and Housing Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg.
In providing such information and communications technology (ICT) facilities in Mukah and other Score hubs, he said it would be planned wisely in accordance with the many economic activities involved.
Abang Johari said the private sector, the government and TM, as the leading telecommunications service provider, could collaborate further to help local SMEs to market their products and get the right financing to achieve the competitive edge in the international market.
Meanwhile, TM Executive Vice-President (SME) Azizi A Hadi said Sarawak's position as one of the top five states with the highest number of SME establishments in the country made it a natural choice as one of the venues for the event, being attended by 500 participants to acquire relevant information on their business and ICT needs.
Apart from being committed to become a major catalyst for Malaysian SMEs, TM was well positioned to propel the country as a regional internet hub and digital gateway for South East Asia by leveraging on its extensive global connectivity, network infrastructure and collective expertise, he said.
