M'sian juniors win opener

Kota Kinabalu: The Malaysian juniors opened their campaign in the 100PLUS Badminton Asia Youth Under-19 Championships with a 4-1 win over Singapore in their Group A match played at the Likas Multi-purpose hall on Sunday.The mixed pair of Chua Khek Wei and Yap Cheng Wen took the first point by defeating Terry Hee and Chua Yi Ling in straight sets 21-18, 21-18 followed by Malaysian top men's singles player Soong Joo Ven who also won in straight sets against Bernard Ong 21-14, 21-15.

However, Ho Yen Mei failed to clinch the winning point for the home team when she lost 7-21, 21-16, 12-21 to her opponent Laing Xiaoyu in the women's singles match.

It was then up to men's doubles Devada Darren Issac and Ong Yew Sin who delivered the goods with a straight sets 21-14, 21-19 victory over Terry Hee and Tan Zi Jian.

Joyce Choong and Goh Yee Ching then wrapped up the match with an easy 21-7, 21-17 win over Elaine Chua and Yeo Jia Min in the women doubles.

Malaysia will next meet minnows Kazakhstan in the evening session on Sunday.

In another Group A match held at the same time, powerhouse Indonesia thrashed Kazakhstan 5-0 and they will take on Malaysia in the final group match at 5pm today (Monday).

In the other matches, defending champions Japan in Group C also has an easy 5-0 win over India and in the same group, Thailand also blanked Uzbekistan 5-0 while in Group B, China and Chinese Taipei both registered 5-0 wins over their respective opponents Nepal and Vietnam.
