They will join over 200 Shell scholars currently pursuing their degrees in Malaysia and abroad.
Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun, who officiated at the Shell Academic Excellence Awards ceremony in Pan-Pacific Sutera, Thursday, said Shell had each year consistently contributed towards advancing the people in the country and State, especially the younger generation, through its Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) efforts.
"It is my fervent hope that more companies in the country will emulate Shell's example," he said.
Shell Malaysia's Director of Government Relations, Rowina Ghazali, said Shell has invested close to RM140 million to help more than 2,000 young Malaysians realise their full academic potential.
She said the Shell Educational Excellence Awards are some of Shell's ways of recognising and rewarding outstanding local talent in communities where the company operates.
"For 2013, I am pleased to inform that Shell Malaysia is awarding scholarships and bursaries worth RM10 million to deserving students across the country," said Rowina.
"We recognise that as Malaysia advances towards becoming a high-income economy, it will need a larger pool of professionals who are highly qualified and able to make the country more competitive."
According to her, a total of 1,700 students applied for the Shell scholarship programme this year, which is carried out in conjunction with the Department of Education.
Towards this end, Shell will continue to invest in capacity-building programmes in support of human capital development in the country and the industry.
At the presentation ceremony, Shell also awarded bursaries to 110 Sabah students for their excellent achievements in the Penilaian Menengah Rendah (PMR). They were among 270 secondary students nationwide who received the bursaries.
Also present at the event was Sabah Education Department Director, Jame Alip.
