Kota Kinabalu: A new aviation school is poised to be set up in Sabah to meet the demands of the aviation industry in East Malaysia and internationally.APR-ATC will be headed by Technical Training Director Terry Chan, who is eager to teach and produce good Licensed Aircraft Engineers (LAE) who are being sought after by the aviation industry.

"Currently there is a high demand for licensed engineers to meet this demand for LAEs, so APR-ATC Sdn Bhd KL felt it was time to spread its wings to Sabah, hence the setting up of APR-ATC (Sabah)," said Chan.

He said with the setting up of the school, Sabahans will now be able to venture into this prestigious industry in Kota Kinabalu without having to leave Sabah.

"There are many advantages of taking the programme here with APR-ATC Sabah compared to taking it overseas.

"If one were to go to UK to study the same course it can cost up to half a million ringgit for fees alone and this is not including the student's living expenses and air tickets, so it definitely is more affordable to do it locally. Students need not also be away from their families to take up the course."

According to Chan, the school APR-ATC (Sabah) will commence its Trainee Aircraft Maintenance Engineers (TAME) programme in April this year.

"The school will be adopting the same modus operandi as APR-ATC Sdn Bhd Kuala Lumpur, a bona fide Aviation Training Organisation, operating out of their main training facility in Shah Alam, Selangor.

Chan said APR-ATC Sdn Bhd KL was well established and widely known to those in the industry since its inception in 1997 and has provided aviation-related training to more than 2,500 students from over 80 organisations both locally and internationally.

"APR-ATC Sdn Bhd KL also holds a Department of Civil Aviation Malaysia (DCAM) Approval to conduct its Part 66 Category B1 courses for Aircraft Maintenance Engineer's Licence on both fixed wing and rotorcraft.

"Also APR-ATC Sdn Bhd KL has been approved to conduct examinations on behalf of the DCAM IAW the terms and conditions stipulated in the above certificate of approval."

"While APR-ATC Sabah will have its own team of instructors it will also be supported by a team of experienced instructors from APR-ATC KL, whenever the need arises.

"APR- ATC Sabah will be adopting the same Maintenance Training Organisation Exposition (MTOE) as that of APR-ATC in KL and compliance to the DCA approved MTOE requirements shall be monitored on a regular basis by both APR-ATC's Internal Quality Department and the Malaysian DCA via scheduled internal and external audits.

Chan also said that with the setting up of the academy they were pleased to note that they were setting a "reverse trend to bring students into the State.

"Instead of students seeking higher education elsewhere, our first batch of TAME programme students totalling about 20 students will be coming over from West Malaysia and they will commence the DCAM Part 66 -B1 licences programme in Kota Kinabalu.

We also already have a few inquiries from local students (and their parents) who were interested to join the programme."

Chan said APR-ATC Sabah will commence operations in April at its training facility located at Kepayan Point, Penampang by- pass.

Those from or residing in Sabah with a good credit in English Mathematics and Physics in their SPM Certificate, O" level, "A" level (Cambridge) or its equivalent or higher are now eligible to apply to its Batch No. 2 TAME programme.
