Kota Kinabalu: ON ensuing continued long-term and better water supply to the people, Pairin said building the Kaiduan Dam in the Penampang-Papar area is most suitable."I am asking the Moyog Assemblyman not to politicise the issue of building the Kaiduan Dam.

"The question of looking for an alternative location, so far, is no more an option because a study has certified that the identified area is the best location to build the dam.

"The Barisan Nasional (BN) government is a responsible government and those affected by the project will not be neglected," he said.

Replying to Kuala Penyu Assemblyman Limus Jury on clean water supply disruptions, Pairin said this was caused by shortage of production of treated water from the water treatment plant at Kg Limbawang, Beaufort, due to high raw water turbidity that could not be processed especially during flooding at Sungai Padas.

"To address this, my ministry through the Water Department will carry out a RM5 million funded-project of building settling tank to address pre-sedimentation and turbidity at the water treatment plant in Limbawang to lower the level of raw water turbidity so that the water can be treated, effectively.

"By doing this, we hope the quality of treated water could achieve standard quality of national drinking water and maximum capacity of water production at the water treatment plant," he said.

Pairin said his ministry would always monitor the supply situation in Kuala Penyu and Menumbuk to ensure the treated water could be channeled to areas that need the supply.

On upgrading the Passenger ferry Terminal at Menumbok as raised by Limus, Pairin said a total of 1.6-acres has been reclaimed for the purpose of "vehicle holding ground" area and the Ministry plans to seal the area to build another ramp as "landing" for the ferry at the terminal.

His Ministry is also looking into a proposal to sell the tickets at the terminal using a computerised/ electronic system.

Pairin said the ticket counter has been removed into the terminal building to make sure control and monitoring can be carried out.

On action against speed boats laden with passengers exceeding the limit, he said appropriate action on the operators has been taken.

In addressing traffic congestion in Kota Kinabalu area with flyovers, Pairin said his Ministry has identified five flyovers to be recommended along Jalan Lintas, including a junction at Foh Sang and that two have been approved for implementation this year while three will be submitted for the 11th Malaysian Plan to be considered.

"A task force has been set up to discuss and look into traffic congestion in Kota Kinabalu and it is chaired by the Mayor and joined by Public Works Department and police," he said, adding that the task force is responsible to look for best approaches to address the problem.
