Kuala Lumpur: The Government has been urged to consider using satellite to monitor maritime activities in Sabah.Silam Member of Parliament Datuk Datu Nasrun Datu Mansur said the satellite could complement the functions of the sea basing system that has been proposed to be implemented in waters off Sabah, through channelling integrated radar and optical information to it.

"The satellite will not only be useful in safeguarding security and monitoring the movements of vessels and fishery activities but also for search and rescue operations.

"Undeniably the expenditure would be substantial but it would all translate into security, stability, increased investment for the tourism sector and therefore more income for the State and country.

"There has been too many incidents of crime and we must combat them at all costs, " he said here Thursday.

Nasrun was also confident that the proposed sea basing system would prevent further incidents of kidnapping, piracy and smuggling off the east coast of Sabah.

Meanwhile, State Tourism, Culture and Environment Minister Datuk Masidi Manjun opined that the sea basing system and a satellite would be a proactive frontline measure for Sabah's security.

"And when foreigners (tourists and investors) see the system they will know that we are serious and have the capability to control the security of our waters," he said.

Semporna Fishermen's Association Chairman Salleh Abd Salleh said the local fishermen's livelihood was adversely affected by up to 50 per cent by the kidnapping and intrusion incidents in the area.

"Once the sea basing system and satellite are in place, we would not have to feel afraid or threatened anymore.

We can go out to sea again and be able to earn our usual income," he said. Sabah Association of Tour and Travel Agents Chairman Robert Chong hoped that the sea basing system would be implemented soon, to restore tourist confidence in Sabah.

"The intrusions and kidnappings had undermined our tourism industry particularly in Semporna; we can breath a sigh of relief if the system is implemented although it would take time for the situation to return to normal," he said.
