Kota Kinabalu: Those who are leaving their homes vacant during the festive holidays are reminded to inform the police of their absence. Acting City Police Chief Supt M. Chandra gave this reminder during a media conference at the Karamunsing Police Station, here, Sunday.

He said police have launched an integrated "Ops Selamat" from July 21 to Aug 4 in conjunction with Hari Raya, with the theme "Rumah Selamat, Selamat Sampai Ke Destinasi."

"This 15-day operation is to promote safety awareness not only on the road but also to prevent break-ins during the festive period. It is also part of our effort to beef up security," he said, adding "we have prepared a form for those going on holiday to fill and hand over to us." The forms can be obtained from the nearest police station, said Chandra.

"They can also call the police station close to where they live or send a text message to Rakan Cop 32728 or call our Emergency Response Services at 999 to inform us of their absence," he added. Chandra said police would do their level best to ensure their homes are safe and conduct patrols at least thrice a day.

A total of 129 houses in the city have been registered since "Ops Selamat" was launched on July 21 until July 27.

Meanwhile, in SANDAKAN, District Police Chief ACP Rowell Marong reminded road users to abide by the traffic rules while on the road to avoid untoward accidents.

Saying there will be a significant increase in the number of vehicles on the road during the festive season, he urged road users to exercise precaution and be tolerant.

Rowell also reminded parents not to allow their children, particularly teenagers, without a driving licence to drive.

He told this to reporters during the district-level "Ops Selamat" held at Mile 6 in Sandakan on Sunday.

Meanwhile, Rowell said two illegal immigrants in their 20s and 30s were detained during the "Ops Selamat."
