Kota Kinabalu: Three top regional teams have confirmed to take part in the 2nd Sabah Governor's Cup Invitational Rugby 15s tournament which is set to kick off at the University Malaysia Sabah stadium on August 27.Sabah Rugby Union President Vela Tan in a press conference held on Monday said the Philippines National Development team, the Kowloon Rugby Football Club and the Singapore National team together with the Sabah Eagles will complete the quartet of four teams for the four-day competition.

"Most of the players in the four participating teams are the cream of the country or state that they represent. For example, three quarters of the Kowloon team are their national players.

"In addition, some have expatriate players who are professionals and we can expect quite a number of guest players from Samoa, Australia, New Zealand and Fiji to give thrilling matches during the course of the tournament."

"For the Sabah Eagles, the tournament will provide a platform to test whether we are on par with the region's best and it is a golden opportunity for us to benchmark ourselves against a strong field of contenders and learn how to develop our strengths and overcome our weaknesses."

He said Sabah Rugby Union will use the tournament to prepare a formidable team to defend their Borneo Cup title in September as well as trying to recapture the Agong's Cup in October.

He added that the event will also create an opportunity for the school children currently involved in the Sabah Academy for Rugby Excellence to witness some of the region's top ruggers in action.

"We want them to see for themselves how rugby is played at the higher level.

Such an experience should further whet their appetite for the game and encourage them to train harder to improve themselves."

He also said the staging of the tournament will also benefit the tourism industry by introducing the many foreign players to the diverse attractions that the State has to offer.

The opening game will start on August 28 at 5pm followed by the official opening ceremony which will be officiated by Youth and Sports Minister Datuk Tawfiq Abu Bakar Titingan while the final will be held on Saturday at 4pm and the closing and prize presentation ceremony will be attended by the Head of State Tun Juhar Mahiruddin.
