Kuching: The development of information and communication technology (ICT) in Sarawak could be fast-tracked if the state had its own communications satellite, State Housing and Tourism Minister, Datuk Amar Abang Johari Tun Openg said here, Wednesday. He said that it was also his personal view that Sarawak could benefit from having the satellite to better position itself in the new global economy.

"There have been a lot of changes in the global economic landscape and we need to position ourselves correctly. In this, I think we should give priority in where to invest.

If I have my way, I would do so in a satellite system," he added.

He told a press conference this after officiating the Universiti Malaysia Sarawak (Unimas) Sixth International Borneo Business Conference 2014 here.

According to Abang Johari, ICT and biotechnology would be Sarawak's strength in competing in the new world economy.

He said the other drivers would include nanotechnology and neurotechnology.

He revealed that a request for RM500 million in federal funding had been submitted towards improving the communication infrastructure in Sarawak as the foundation for ICT.

"I admit we still have to make a lot of investments in infrastructure for communication.

The moment we have this infrastructure, then ICT can become the highway," he added.

On biotechnology development, he said Sarawak's global position could be further strengthened should there be more research and development of products from its biodiversity material. -Bernama
