Razif the star attraction at badminton meet here

Kota Kinabalu: Badminton great Razif Sidek will be the star attraction in the 2nd Flypower AST Badminton Invitation Championship 2014 at the Likas Indoor Stadium from Aug 29-Sept 1.The 52-year-old who won countless international titles with his younger brother Jalani, including the All England title in 1982 and the bronze medal in the Barcelona Olympic Games in 1992 as well as helping the country to win the Thomas Cup in 1992, has been named to play in the men's veteran age 80 combined and above category with Lee Kim Wai and the 95 combine category with Steven Joker.

With his expected presence, organising chairman Tan Boon Bin said that it is a huge boost for the tournament and also serves as a treat for fans.

"This is definitely great news for the locals and I am sure he still possesses the skills to thrill the fans here and the public should not to miss the chance to come in full force to support the tournament."

According to Tan , the four-day event is already a success with the record numbers of more than 1,200 players competing in 16 events with the boys under 18 having the most entries with 154 followed by the boys singles under 16 (113), men novice doubles (96), boys singles under 10 (83), men novice singles (73), boys doubles under 13 (68), men veteran double 80 (57), boys doubles under 16 (51), men veteran doubles 95 (42), girls singles under 10 (36), girls singles under 13 (25), boys doubles under 19 (20), girls singles under 16 (16) girls doubles under 16 (11), girls doubles under 10 (8) and girls doubles under 13 (8).

"It was a surprise for us with the record entries received this year, which are 200 more than the first edition that was held in 2012.

"It is probably the biggest tournament ever staged here in the State to date and most of the players are from the district and clubs throughout Sabah as well as some from the Peninsula and Sarawak."

He said due to the large turn-out, they have opted for the 31 points system where the players will need to change side once they reach 16 points and there will be no deuce to avoid any delay in finishing the matches on time.

All top four winners in each category will receive Flypower equipment and medals while the top four winners in the novice singles and doubles, veteran events will also collect additional cash prize of RM600, RM300,RM150, RM150 respectively.

Tan also called on those who play in the morning session on Aug 30 and 31 to come at least 90 minutes before their schedule matches as the main road leading to the venue will be jammed with the Merdeka day celebration taking place at the Likas Stadium.
