Labuan sees 75pc hike in price of ice cubes

Labuan: Coffeeshops, pubs, cafes and other outlets are feeling "chilled" by a 75 per cent hike in the price of edible ice cube effective Sept 1st.The price per 10kg bag of ice cube used to be RM2 but the new price is RM3.50. The three distributors of ice cubes here who jointly decided to up the prices did not provide any reason for the increase.

A Kopitam proprietor at the Jati Commercial Centre who revealed this said: "We did expect prices of some items to increase in the wake of the higher electricity tariff implemented by SESB early this year."But the power price increased only by less than 20 per cent or so for high consumers. Comparing this to the hike of ice cube price by 75 per cent is exorbitant, unfair and unjust unless the distributors could provide valid supporting reasons."He added that there would be no objection if the price per 10 kg bag were increased by 50 sen or so.

The proprietor also noted that for big outlets and pubs the incease might not pose a problem because the price of drinks in pub, especially, was already high and acceptable to consumers."But what about the small-time operators of cafes, etc."
