JOHOR BARU: Affordable homes are privileges given to the people by the state and, as such, should not be used as a way to make profits, said Johor Mentri Besar Datuk Mohamed Khaled Nordin. Those who received affordable homes, he said, would soon be barred from selling their units within at least five years without approval from the state government.

This policy was similar to that applied for bumiputra lots, said Mohamed Khaled, adding that this was to prevent abuse.

"All the affordable homes granted to the people are subsidised by the state government," he said.

"We do not want them to buy these units at RM90,000 and resell them for between RM150,000 and RM200,000, especially since they had mentioned in their applications that they could not afford these homes," he said after attending a ground-breaking ceremony for affordable homes in Taman Baiduri and Kampung Sungai Danga here yesterday.

Both these projects had earlier been abandoned.

On the Forest City project in Iskandar Malaysia, which Singapore raised concerns over the land reclamation work near the Second Link, Mohamed Khaled said it would have a positive impact on Johor's property market.

The development, he said, could help divert foreign buyers there and provide more chances for locals to own property here.

"The people may not enjoy the impact now as it is a 30-year project," he said. "However, once the project is finished in phases, it will have a positive effect on the locals."

The Forest City project involves the development of 2,000ha man-made island, which will be bigger than Pangkor.

It is being developed by China's Country Garden and its partner Johor state company Kumpulan Prasarana Rakyat Johor.
