KOTA KINABALU: The Malaysian Pharmaceutical Society is deeply concerned over the recent reports of imitation drugs and fake registration numbers, said Its President Datuk Nancy Ho."The Ministry of Health is very vigilant over the quality and safety of medicines. Hence, all medicines and healthcare products must be registered," she said.

In relation to this, she said the Society would advocate that consumers buy medicines from licensed premises such as pharmacies and seek advice from healthcare professionals.

Nancy said this in her speech at the opening of the Cosway Pharmacy's 15th branch in Sabah, at Inanam, near here, Sunday. Members of the public, she said, need to be informed about unhealthy practice for monetary gains.

"This occasion is even more meaningful as we are about to celebrate the World Pharmacists Day on Sept 25.

"This day is dedicated to pharmacists throughout the world in celebration of their contributions to healthcare services," she added.

The theme for this year's World Pharmacists Day is 'Access to Pharmacist is Access to Healthcare.'

Pharmacists have been described by the World Health Organisation and its sister organisation - the international Pharmacist Federation (FIP) – as a caregiver, communicator, decision maker, teacher, lifelong learner, leader and manager.

In short, they are known as the "Seven-Star Pharmacist". Pharmacists have been dubbed as very trustworthy professionals by many rating authorities such as the Gallup Polls.

Nancy congratulated the management and staff of Cosway Pharmacy on the official launching of the new branch.

Josh Billings once said, "Health is like money. We will never have a true idea of its value until we lose it. Hence, health is indeed wealth."

Meanwhile, Assistant Minister in the Chief Minister's Department, Datuk Yong Oui Fah, who officiated the event, said he is pleased that the pharmacy community in Malaysia is growing in numbers and hoped the quality of service by pharmacists will continue to be upgraded.

"I understand that Cosway Pharmacy is now one of the largest pharmacy chains in the State and is poised to grow further to serve the needs of the community.

"Sabah is experiencing exponential growth in all sectors. However, in order to sustain this growth, the people of Sabah must continue to enjoy good health as without health there will be no wealth."

"Hence, a healthy lifestyle should be promoted," he said.
