Builder pays sogit to Ramaya folks
PENAMPANG: A two-year old buffalo was presented by a housing developer Abode Construction Sdn Bhd to the villagers of Kg Ramaya for appeasement of the spirits of an old graveyard which may have been disturbed by noisy machinery building an access road at the border of the graveyard. The villagers led by their village chief and chairman of JKKK later slaughtered the buffalo as a ritual sacrifice, near the Balai Raya Ramaya adjacent to the graveyard.

When asked, Benedict John Bestan 85 as a very senior village chief said the customary adat is complied and the construction can be allowed to proceed.

Meanwhile JKKK Chairman Leonard Sitalu and Project Director Martin Golokin said there was no damage done to any existing graveyard and no jars or bones of any kind was found or unearth when the earthworks were carried out.

The project owner informed that retaining wall will be constructed to protect the graveyard area from landslides when they construct the access road to the proposed 14 units of residential houses. He also claimed getting clearance earlier from the land office through the Penampang District Council.

Also invited to the event were District Chief Bryan Matasing, Native Chief Woritus Paulus and two other village chiefs from the native court and three police officers from Penampang Police station.

While the event was underway, the original complainant Lesley Sipalan with two others turned up to submit protest letters to the District Chief stating amongst others that the event was improper, that it should have been done before the project started. Sipalan then left without participating in the event.

Further meeting is expected to be conducted by the village chief to clear any misunderstanding between the complainants and the project owners.
