Kedah to initiate bamboo agenda to promote the industry

ALOR SETAR: The Kedah government will initiate the Kedah Bamboo Agenda (KBA) to promote the bamboo industry in the state. "I hope the private and public sectors, non-governmental institutions, institutions of learning, communitry leaders and youths take up this golden opportunity to be directly or indirectly involved in the bamboo industry, and the state government is ready to help," Menteri Besar Datuk Seri Mukhriz Tun Dr Mahathir said at the launch of World Bamboo Day 2014 at Tabung Haji Hotel and Convention Centre near here Monday.Mukhriz said the government plans to create a Bamboo Park in Bukit Wang, Kubang Pasu and the Green Bamboo Valley in Padang Terap.

Met by reporters after the launch, he said the government also plans to build a bamboo canopy at Taman Jubli Emas here as soon as possible, and has directed the relevant state executive councillors to begin discussions with Global Innovation and Entrepreneurship Foundation (GIEF) as well as Konsortium Bamboo Malaysia.A Bamboo Commercialisation Centre (BCC) is also planned for Gunung Kerian with the cooperation of the Ministry of Science, Technology and Innovation, as part of efforts to reduce carbon dioxide emissions, he added. – Bernama
