Pupils enthusiastic at exam resit

KUALA LUMPUR: The resit of the 2014 Ujian Pencapaian Sekolah Rendah (UPSR) Science and English papers went smoothly and pupils were seen to be in high spirits sitting for them.Many among them saw it as a second chance to improve their scores.

21,024 pupils comprising 12,847 government school candidates), Chinese National Type Schools (7,453), Tamil National Type Schools (611) and private candidates (113) sat for the new papers in the two subjects.

Kuala Lumpur Education Department director Nawal Salleh said all the pupils were from the five zones of Bangsar (two), Pudu, Keramat and Sentul while 1,183 invigilators were tasked with ensuring the smoothness of the examination.

A pupil of Sekolah Kebangsaan (SK) Bangsar, Siti Aida Nabila Aini, said it was an opportunity to improve on her performance after the original UPSR examination, which started on Sept 9.

"Definitely nervous, but okay because possibly in the examination prior to this, my answers were not good especially in the English papers, but could be improved upon this time," she said when met at the school.

At SK Menjalara, Bandar Menjalara, Kepong, Asmah Ismail, 41, wanted her daughter Nuraqilah Abd Farouk, 12, to do her best and to put aside the nervousness she was feeling.

"I felt relieved when I saw my daughter was so excited to sit for the papers again," said Asmah, who is also a music teacher at the school.

In PAHANG, State Education Department (Assessment and Examination Sector) chief Razali Mohd said no reports were received to date on refusal of pupils to sit for the subjects again.

A total 25,133 candidates had to resit the two papers at 561 centres with 2,279 examination invigilators statewide.

The repeated examination papers today were Science 018, 028 and 038 and English 014/1 and English 014/2. The new date for the resit of Mathematics 015/1, 025/1, 035/1 and Tamil Language 036 and 037 papers is on Oct 9.

The resits were called after leaks of these UPSR examination papers. A total of 472,853 pupils sat for the UPSR examination this year.

In PENANG, SK Jalan Hamilton's Parent-Teacher Association (PIBG) chairman, Mohd Nizam Nazri Mohd Hisham, 45, said parents should continue to give support and encouragement to their children to perform their best.

"It has already happened, what we can do is continue to be together with the children, give them encouragement and look at the situation positively," he said.

A total 23,621 candidates resat the UPSR Science and English papers at 281 examination centres in the state, and Penang Education Department director Datuk Osman Hussain said it went smoothly.

In TERENGGANU, State Education director Zakaria Hussin said the department and schools cooperated with counsellors to revive the spirit of the students who were adversely affected by the leaks.

"I also reminded prefects on duty to ensure nothing untoward took place and to ensure what transpired this year to be a lesson for all," he said. adding that 21,791 candidates resat the UPSR examination statewide.

In PERAK, State Education Department director Mohd Idris Ramli said seven of the 38,566 candidates sat for the repeat papers today at four hospitals due to health problems.

In KELANTAN, the resit involved 32,926 candidates including 55 hearing impaired or shortsighted pupils, said State Education Department director Hussain Awang.

In MELAKA, the resit involving 13,780 candidates went smoothly and received the cooperation of all parents, said State Education, Higher Education, Science and Technology, Green Technology and Innovation Committee chairman Datuk Md Yunos Husin.

In SARAWAK, 42,669 of 43,030 candidates who registered to sit for UPSR, resat for the two subjects, which went well, according to State Education Department (Assessment and Examination Sector) chief Su Hiong Ai.

In KEDAH, Kedah State Education, Transport and Public Works Committee Chairman Datuk Tajul Urus Mat Zain said 35,769 pupils said for the two papers at 571 centres statewide.

In JOHOR, State Education Department director Aminuddin Adam said there were no reports about absent candidates and the repeat examination involving 57,486 candidates went well.

In NEGERI SEMBILAN, State Education Director Datuk Kalsom Khalid hoped counselling sessions, motivation and support given would be fruitful for 30,000 pupils resitting the UPSR examination.- – Bernama.
