Strong gusts create havoc in Labuan

LABUAN: Strong gusts swept the island, leaving two houses roofless and uprooted trees obstructing roads, in the early hours, Thursday.The Member of Parliament Service Centre immediately swung into action, mobilising the Labuan Corporation's Socio Economic Department, National Security Council, Fire Department, Social Welfare Department.

The affected houses were at Sg Keling on the hillock and another in Belukut left 26 occupants exposed to the rain from 2am. The day's weather had been gloomy and rained intermittently.

Help was rendered to cover the houses with canvas. As soon as weather permits, Labuan MP Chief Administrator Basran Yunus, said repair would be undertaken.

At the same time, the relevant agencies would render emergency aid to relieve the victims.

The Fire Department had a busy day removing tree trunks to allow vehicles to pass through.

Meanwhile at the Labuan International Ferry Terminal, the speedboat ferry service was hardly affected by the stormy sea to Menumbok.

A check with the ticketing counters showed the number of trips dropped from the normal 15 to 13. Each trip carries 12 passengers.

The Brunei-Labuan ferry arrived at 1pm on schedule. One passenger Erwin Surianto, who returned from visiting relatives told Daily Express that the sea was rough upon leaving Muara. However, after 15 minutes of departure, the waves were not high but swelling, said the Malaysian who is a surfer.

The Meteorological Department had warned that the strong wind would last until Sunday. Coastal fishermen had been advised not to go out to sea.
