Sabah junior squash players do well at Negeri Sembilan meets

KOTA KINABALU: Sabah junior squash players did well despite a slip up by Jessica Keng in the just concluded 16th Ong Ben Hee and Nicol David (OBHND) challenge trophies tournament which was held in two separate venues in Negeri Sembilan from Oct 13-19.Favourite Jessica, who was the top seed in the elite girls Under-13 category, unexpectedly lost in five sets 11-7, 7-11, 8-11, 11-7 and 11-13 to Kedah's Wong Heng Wai in the semi-final but managed to bounce back to defeat Kiroshanna of Negeri Sembilan to secure a third place finish.

In the same category, Yee Xin Ying from Sandakan who was upgraded from Under-11 emerged as ranked 13th and fellow teammate Izzati Abdul Karim finished in 31st position.

In the Development category, top seeded Etain Tay failed to live up to her top billing as she lost to Helena Sit of Penang 8-11, 9-11 and 3-11 in the final to finish in second place.

The elite boys Under-13 saw Duncan Lee Yii Yong, who was seeded 3rd/4th, finish in third place after the defeat of Kelantan's Amir Amirul in the play off.

He had earlier put up a gallant fight before losing to eventual champion Nathan Kueh from Sarawak in five sets 10-12, 11-7, 13-11, 11-13, 3-11 in the semifinal.

Teammate Yee Zhen Hong from Sandakan secured a final 22th ranking in the same category.

The only Tawau player in the Sabah team, Muhammad Akid Izz Zulkifli gave a good account of himself to emerge sixth in the Boys Development category.

In the team events, Sabah girls consisted of Jessica Keng, Yee Xin Ying, Etain Tay and Nur Izzati Abdul Karim, successfully defeated Pahang, Kelantan, Pahang and Federal Territory but lost 2-1 to powerhouse and eventual champions, Kedah in the semifinal to eventually rank fifth.

The boys' team led by Duncan Lee with Mohd Azib and Muhd Akid also did well to end up in fifth position.

The six-day competition saw the top four players from each state competing in theUnder-13 age category to vie for the Ong Ben Hee Trophy and the Nicol David Trophy. Sabah contingent was led by team manager Madam Chung and coaches Bryan Farillo and Naved Khan.
