Eddie determined to bounce back
KOTA KINABALU: State top sprinter Eddie Edward Jr is determined to bounce back from his recent injury woes as he aims to make his second appearance at the Singapore SEA Games scheduled to be held in June next year. The 23-year-old is currently taking a rest after suffering a groin injury at the recent 4th Brunei Athletics Open at the Tutong Sports Complex and despite his forced withdrawal at the 100m event, he managed to overcome the pain to run a good race in the 4 x100 relay with fellow teammates Lim Chee Hiong, Erwan Syafee and Rayzam Shah Wan Sofian and delivered a silver for the Sabah contingent.

Express Sports caught up with him on Tuesday and he explained his frustrations at not being able to get out on the track to train.

"Obviously it's not been a very good preparation. It's not what I dreamt of with the SEA Games only less than a year away but I'm trying to get fit as quickly as possible. It's not easy at the moment but I'm sure with more rest I will be able to train soon.

"It is not a major injury and the rest was just a precaution. All I'm thinking about at the moment is trying to get out on the track. That's my main priority," he said.

With no more competitions for him this year, Eddie has only the Brunei Borneo Track and Field Championship in March to aim for at this moment.

"At the moment it seems that only the Borneo Track and Field Championship in Tutong Complex in March is my only main competition next year which is definitely not enough in my preparation to qualify for the SEA Games.

"My target is to run below 10.50s next year and to do that I need more competitions, hopefully I will get my wish in the new year."

Eddie, who has a personal best of 10.62 set in 2013 that qualified him for the SEA Games, only managed this year's best of 10.75s set at the Kedah Open in April, the same time he recorded in the final of the Myanmar SEA Games that saw him finish in seventh place.
