KOTA KINABALU: A total of 39,525 students in Sabah will be sitting for the Sijil Pelajaran Malaysia (SPM) examination from Nov 3 until Dec 4, said State Education Director Datuk Jame Alip.He said 2,926 examination prefects, including deputies and assistant prefects as well as room cleaners, have been assigned to look after 312 centres that would be opened for the purpose of the examination.

"I would strongly advise the parents and guardians of their children sitting for the national examinations, including Sijil Tinggi Persekolahan Malaysia (STPM) and Malaysian University English Test (Muet), to come early to the examination centres and bring along their MyKads to ensure a smooth process.

"The students must also check regularly the examination schedules that have been given to them so that they would not miss the dates for their papers, especially on the first week and second week," he said.

Jame said this in a press conference at Wisma Pendidikan, here, Thursday.

Of the 39,525, he said 34 students are physically handicapped comprising 23 hearing impaired students, 10 with eyesight problems and one blind student.

According to him, all SPM subjects that were initially scheduled on Nov 27 has been changed to Dec 4 due to the birthday of Sultan of Perak which falls on Nov 27 and is a public holiday for them.

Due to erratic weather nowadays that could lead to flooding and landslides, Jame said proactive measures at all level especially the district education offices (PPD) and schools have been prepared for any unexpected incidents.

"All PPD in Sabah, including the schools, have been briefed what to do and they have been asked to prepare their contingency plans like plan A, B and C when facing such eventualities.

"Among the measures are providing alternative locations or additional classes in nearby schools to enable students sit for the exam when the current examination centres are flooded or the pathway to the schools is not passable.

"The PPD and school authorities will also make sure students affected by bad weather or natural disaster will take the papers as scheduled," he said.

Operation rooms for SPM, STPM and Muet, he said, will be at Sabah Education Department, 7th floor of the Federal House with contact numbers 088-513583 (counters), 088-513594 (SPM Unit) and 088-513590 (STPM Unit) operating from 8.30am to 6.30pm from Monday till Friday.

He said the SPM Unit head, Zainun Johari, can be reached at 019-8015989 and Unit head for Pre-University and Overseas, Mariati Abdullah, at 019-8604177.

In fact, Jame said four primary schools in Beaufort, namely SK Sinoko, SK Bambangan, SK Lembah Poring and SK Tamalang, were closed Thursday involving 217 pupils and 50 teachers due to flooding at the schools and the roads heading to the schools were also flooded.

On any possible leak in the SPM papers, he said closed-circuit televisions (CCTV) with three cameras have been installed in each of the 29 vault rooms and seven security rooms in Sabah.
