14 countries coming for Rotary event in KK
KOTA KINABALU: For the first time in the history of Rotary International (RI), Kota Kinabalu has been selected to host the Kota Kinabalu Rotary Institute (KKRI) event from Nov 19 to 23 this year. KKRI comprises Rotary Zones 6B, 7A and 10B covering 14 countries in the Asia-Pacific region. Previous hosts were Manila, Bangkok, Bali, Selangor and Taipei.Chief Minister Datuk Seri Panglima Musa Aman has been invited to be the guest of honour for the welcome banquet which will be attended by over 1000 delegates (including spouses) from Pakistan, Bangladesh, Afghanistan, Mongolia, Hong Kong, Macau, Taiwan, The Philippines, Laos, Thailand, Indonesia, Singapore, Brunei and Malaysia.

The 2014 KKRI Organising Committee headed by Institute Chairman Past District Governor (PDG) Edward Sung Burongoh and Co-Chairman Past District Governor Datuk Zainie Abdul Aucasa extended the invitation to the CM during a courtesy call at his office at the State Assembly Building, Tuesday.

The eight-member delegation included Vice-Chairman DG-Elect Philip Chong, Honorary Treasurer Michael Tong, Major Donors Chairperson Datuk Margaret Fung, Spouse Programme Chairperson Datuk Naomi Chong Set Mui, Promotion, Media and Publication Chairman Datuk Lee Chuen Wan and Sergeant-at Arms Chairman Datuk Alex Sham.

Briefing Musa on the Rotary Institute, Edward said it is one of the important events in the Rotary calendar (second to the Rotary International World Convention) where Rotary District Governors-Elect from over 500 Rotary districts worldwide are given their first training before holding office as District Governors.

"The 2014 KKRI has received overwhelming support from Rotarians in the three Zones.

Current RI President Gary Huang, who is based in Taiwan, Trustees of the Rotary Foundation and several RI Board of Directors have confirmed attendance. Among them is RI Past President Bhichai Rattakul, also a former Deputy Prime Minister of Thailand," he said.

Meanwhile, Promotion, Media and Publication Chairman Lee said the Organising Committee comprising members of the seven Rotary Clubs in Kota Kinabalu, started planning early last year after Kota Kinabalu was chosen to host the 2014 Institute.

"The Organising Committee will be promoting Sabah as an ideal tourist destination and highlighting investment opportunities in agriculture, manufacturing and the oil and gas industry, among other economic sectors," he said.
