KUALA LUMPUR: Three more School-in-Hospital (SDH) programmes which help students receive education while recuperating in hospitals will be implemented in Tawau, Kuala Terengganu and Kangar next year. Deputy Education Minister P. Kamalanathan said the move was taken to meet the demand for such facilities.

"If many private companies come forward to give support, then we can have more schools in hospitals," he told reporters after the closing ceremony of the Second Seminar on School-in-Hospital, here Friday.

Also present was the wife of the Deputy Prime Minister Puan Sri Noorainee Abdul Rahman, who was also the patron of the SDH programme.

Kamalanathan said the SDH was the only programme of its kind in the region and was an example to other nations.

Earlier, in his speech, Kamalanathan said since its launch in 2011, as many as 56,528 school children undergoing treatment in hospitals had taken part in the programme.

He said the number showed that the government was truly committed in its efforts to look after the welfare of students in hospitals to continue their studies while undergoing treatment.

Four resolutions were passed at the three-day seminar, including requesting the Education Ministry to give priority to building a teacher training excellence centre specifically for the SDH programme as well as strengthening the edutainment aspect of teacher training for the SDH programme through gamification.

The documents on the resolutions were presented to Noorainee who then handed them over to Education director-general, Datuk Seri Dr Khair Mohamad Yusof for further action. – Bernama
