KOTA KINABALU: DAP will stand behind Petaling Jaya Utara MP Tony Pua should a defamation suit be filed against him by Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak pertaining to the 1Malaysia Development Berhad (1MDB) controversies, said its Secretary General Lim Guan Eng."Even though the Prime Minister has only issued a notice of demand to Pua, the Prime Minister clearly has already made up his mind to go all the way and sue," he said.

Officiating at the DAP Sabah annual convention at Grand Portview here Saturday, the Penang Chief Minister said while DAP would not want to make further comments on the potential legal suit, he assured that DAP would not relent in pressing for a full accounting in the public interest the financial viability and rationale of 1MDB.

Meanwhile, DAP Sabah Chief Jimmy Wong said the theme chosen for the convention was "Justice to the Oath Stone" to show the party's respect to the Oath Stone and its purpose.

"We will also continue our struggle to return the words "Kerajaan Malaysia Jamin" (the government of Malaysia guarantees) to the Oath Stone plaque," he said.

Wong, who is also Kota Kinabalu MP, said DAP in Sabah was not only facing challenges from the Barisan Nasional (BN) but also from the growing urge for Sabah and Sarawak to leave Malaysia.

He said DAP Sabah was not going along with such sentiment because it would be of no help in understanding the problems and finding a better solution for Sabah and its people.

"As patriotic Sabahans and Malaysians, we have to study and understand this sentiment as well as the reason for the unhappiness of the people of Sabah.

"By understanding their feelings, we can find a solution so that Malaysia can grow stronger and united," he said while reiterating that it is best that a lesson be drawn from the recent referendum on Scottish independence.

Wong said it was also time for Malaysia to review the Federal system, which he claimed has failed in terms of distribution of resources.

On another note, he urged Deputy Chief Minister Tan Sri Joseph Pairin Kitingan who will be chairing the special committee to study and implement the proposed recommendations in the Royal Commission of Inquiry (RCI) on illegal immigrants in Sabah report to be committed in carrying out the responsibility entrusted to him.

"He should resign immediately if he failed to do something resulting in the report becoming obsolete. He would then have failed not only to carry out his duty but would have disappointed all Sabah people," said Wong.

In this respect, he said Pairin should also call upon representatives from NGOs, opposition, scholars and media among others to be members of the committee.
