KOTA KINABALU: The first batch of Master of Engineering (Oil and Gas) graduates received their scrolls during the Universiti Malaysia Sabah (UMS) 16th Convocation Ceremony held at its Chancellor Hall, here, Saturday. One of the graduates, Chung Chen Chong, 63, said by having a Master's Degree in the field, he hoped to contribute to the Government's vision in getting more than 20,000 individuals involved in the oil and gas sector in the future.

During an interview, Chung took the opportunity to express his gratitude to all those who had supported him throughout the course of his studies.

"I would like to thank my superior, family members, especially my wife, professors especially my course director, Professor Pogaku Ravindra, and classmate, Mooganamoorthy Ganesan, who had supported and helped me throughout my studies.

"My wife, throughout my studies, had been very understanding as I was seldom at home and often spent my time doing revisions and assignments," he said.

Chung, who is currently working but decided to take a full time master's programme, said he had also divided his time well between attending classes and working.

"I am very lucky that my superior allowed me to continue with my studies," he said, adding that he is currently thinking of whether to pursue his PhD studies.

"My advice for all those young people out there is that there is no age limit when it comes to pursuing your studies and ambitions because I believe where there is a will, there will always be a way," he said.

However, Chung explained that he did encounter challenges in his studies as it has been more than 20 years since he last took his Diploma in Civil Engineering at University of Dundee in Scotland as well as his Bachelor's Degree in Tamkang University in Taiwan.

"Therefore, I would like to thank God in helping me to go through the ordeals," he said.

Chung, whose two children who are currently pursuing their studies in Taylor's University in Architecture as well as Hospitality Management, said he had decided to further his studies at UMS because of the cheaper cost besides it being located nearby his workplace.

"I find that there is not much difference between the universities overseas as well as those in Malaysia. However, I remember that we used to have lots of presentations during my studies in the United Kingdom whereas in Malaysia, I find it to be more exam-oriented," he said.
