LABUAN: The culture of extended family is very much alive on the island. This leads to a low rate of social ills, according to the Labuan Women Development Council. While not brushing off youths involved in illegal racing, its Chief Datuk Hajar Aini Sapar said Labuan is free from baby dumping so far.

"Although Labuan is developing at a very fast pace, we must uphold and defend our family institution," said Hajar, who is also head of the Labuan Umno Wanita wing, in an interview in conjunction with the State-level Family 1Malaysia Month at Kg Patau Patau 2.

She said her grandparents, uncles, auntie and cousins gave a well-grounded childhood.

"Having said that, as a grandmother, I don't take over the parenthood of my grandchildren.

The discipline and responsibilities of parents cannot be assumed other than the father and mother."

Unlike Kuala Lumpur and other bigger cities where kids are left to babysitters and daycare centres, she noted that growing up in Labuan has the advantage of the extended family.

Member of Parliament Datuk Rozman Haji Isli, who launched the celebration, described the family institution as the building block of the nation's wellbeing.

"The Family Month is to give emphasis and importance of the family institution as a social component in the development of human capital. A strong family inculcates an individual becoming a noble character," he said.

The source of happiness of parents is the children. On this note, he urged them not to be blinded by the pursuit of material success at the expense of the family.

Ultimately, the purpose of life is happiness, he said, adding, "parenthood is a long and continuous process."

Organised by the Population and Family Development Board, it was participated by the Royal Malaysian Police Amanita Squad, Anti-Drug Abuse Department, Agriculture Department and a physiotherapy centre, and sponsored by Labuan FSA, Bank Rakyat and Tekun.

The Board's Labuan Director, Hisyamuddin Hamzah, said the theme for this year was "Hug Family 10 seconds" to strengthen bonds within the family, based on love, moral, knowledge, health and safety.
