Dept proposes college for special students

KOTA KINABALU: State Education Director Datuk Jame Alip has proposed that a vocational college for students with special needs be set up in Sabah.He said it is timely for such college to be established to provide organised and systematic modules and syllabus in producing well-trained students in various skills relevant to the workforce sector."I believe BTC Group Berhad is the suitable and right company to take up this proposal as it is the first company in the country that is willing and volunteers to train the special students in a smart partnership.ADVERTISEMENT "The company and Education Ministry signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) of Career Skills Transition Training Programme for special students, four years ago."We are willing to assist the company if it decides to materialise the aspiration in educating and providing training to the special students," he said.Jame said this at the presentation of certificates to 41 special students at Wisma BTC, Inanam, Saturday.Assistant Minister to the Chief Minister Datuk Mohd Arifin Mohd Arif represented the Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman at the ceremony.ADVERTISEMENT On the training programme, Jame said the company started with five special students in 2010 and now 41 students had completed the training for this year.Since 2010 until now, he said a total of 99 special students have undergone on-the-job training at various outlets of BTC here.

"Nine schools that provide special education in five districts, namely Kota Kinabalu, Penampang, Tuaran, Papar and Kuala Penyu, have participated in the programme."Due to its effectiveness, the department plans to involve more special students to enjoy the opportunity and have the chance to develop their potentials, skills and abilities," he said.Jame said the department is considering extending the programme to the East Coast of Sabah, especially in Tawau and Lahad Datu.In light of this, he said BTC Group Berhad has stated its commitment to accept special students to undergo the training at their outlets in the two districts.He said four schools that offer special education in Papar and Kota Belud have voiced their intention to participate in the programme as the best platform in equipping students with special needs with necessary training before entering the labour force.According to Jame, the Education Ministry had selected the career skills transition training programme to be implemented in Sabah under the Performance Management Delivery Unit (Pemandu) and headed by SMK Kolombong, Inanam.As a result, he said the Special Education Division under the Education Ministry and Pemandu has recognised that the programme is excellent as a national module.Stay up-to-date by following Daily Express’s Telegram channel.

He commended BTC Group Berhad for their commitment and dedication in continuing the programme as it shows that the company does not solely think of earning profits.Jame hoped the programme would inspire other private and big companies to come forward and provide the same opportunity for special students.
