Tokoh Maal Hijrah awards for Tuaran duo

TUARAN: Datuk Ismail @ Tony Ibrahim and Jamaliah Antalip were awarded the Tokoh Maal Hijrah 2014 in the men and women categories, respectively, for Tuaran district.On hand to present the awards was Local Government and Housing Minister Datuk Seri Hajiji Noor at the Tuaran district-level Maal Hijrah celebration at Dewan Seri Sulaman here.It was a timely birthday present for Ismail who turned 74 earlier this month.

Tony, as he is fondly known among friends, joined the police force in 1954 and was transferred to the marine branch a few years later. An avid boxer in his younger days, he rose to become the Deputy President of the Sabah Boxing Association upon his retirement. It was during his boxing days that he earned the stage name of "Tony". After his retirement, he joined politics and served for a number of years as the Treasurer of Umno Tuaran Division.It was an equally befitting birthday present for Jamaliah who celebrated her birthday last month. She is both head of the Umno Tuaran Wanita movement and Chairperson of the Tuaran Parliamentary-level Women & Family Development Council.

A board member of the Sabah Housing & Town Development Authority (LPPB), she also once served as Deputy Chairperson of Supernesa, a LPPB subsidiary.Present at the function were Tuaran DO A.M. Ibnu A.K. Baba who is also the organising chairman, Tamparuli Community Development Leader (PPM) Datuk Jahid Jahim; and Tuaran Umno Vice-Chairman Kassim Razali and Sulaman PPM Johari Saiman.
