KOTA KINABALU: A 31-year-old local Bugis who is currently serving time for various offences promised to observe the religious knowledge he had acquired in prison once he is released.Sukarman Kadir, said this during mitigation before Sessions Court Judge Ainul Shahrin Mohamad handed him a total of 30 years' jail for robbing two women and asking one of them to perform oral sex on him.

"I promise to not repeat any crime in future after my release from prison. I have learnt a lot of religious knowledge in prison. "I will practice all the religious knowledge, which I have learnt in prison after serving all the jail sentences imposed on me.

"I really regret all my offences," said Sukarman who also applied to be sent in Kepayan prison to serve the jail sentence.

Sukarman, a father of three, begged for all the sentences handed to him to be run concurrently with the sentence which he is currently serving.

He told the court that his father is sick.

On Monday, his cases were brought to court for case management but he changed his plea and pleaded guilty to all the charges against him.

On the first count, he was sent to prison for 10 years plus two strokes of the cane for asking a 23-year-old woman to perform oral sex on him at 4am on Aug 19 this year at a house in Taman Sri Kepayan, here. The offence under Section 377C of the Penal Code carries a jail term of between five years and 20 years and whipping, on conviction.

On the second and third counts, Sukarman was jailed 10 years and ordered given five strokes of the cane on each count of robbing the 23-year-old woman and her 25-year-old friend, of two smartphones and a gold necklace at the same place and time.

Sukarman had used a machete during the crime.

Ainul ordered Sukarman to serve the jail sentence on the first count after completing his jail sentence imposed by the Petaling Jaya court and ordered the second and third count to run consecutively with the first count.

Meanwhile, Deputy Public Prosecutor Dominic Chew urged the court to hand down a heavy sentence on the grounds that he has nine previous convictions for various crimes such as rape, housebreaking, taking drug and armed robbery.

Chew said long term imprisonment must be imposed on Sukarman as a warning and lesson not only for him but other would-be-offenders.

The court heard that while one of the victims was having her dinner in the house an unknown man armed with a machete entered and threatened to harm her if she refused to surrender her belongings.

The man, later identified as Sukarman then grabbed the 25-year-old victim's hanpdhone before grabbing the handphone and a gold necklace from the other 23-year-old victim who was in the house at the time. Before Sukarman fled, he forced the 23-year-old woman to perform oral sex on him.
