KOTA KINABALU: Kota Kinabalu Chinese Chamber of Commerce and Industry (KKCCCI) President Datuk Michael Lui on Monday hoped the government would provide for an acclimatisation process for the implementation of the Goods and Services Tax(GST)."We hope the government would accord an acclimatisation process and allow for excusable mistakes during the initial implementation period of GST, instead of hurling excessive cash penalty at business operators for their unintended mistakes regarding the non compliance of certain matters on the GST.

"I would also like to appeal to the government prior to the implementation of GST to listen to the problems/queries raised by participants of the business community in a number of seminars, hence the importance of Customs Department officers to be diligently present to explain any doubts and questions on GST."

Lui said this at a joint seminar by KKCCCI and Telekom Malaysia to introduce the 'Cloud GST 365 Software System' at the KKCCCI building in Kg Air here.

He said there were still considerable numbers of business operators who were uncertain on the terms and conditions of GST and who lacked understanding of it or were unclear on the procedure, application process for registration under GST as well as categorisation of goods.

Lui added that business operators also face the problem of looking for competent accountants to resolve their problems which is a worrying matter for them.

"I must also remind our business community to verify messages forwarded by unqualified elements on GST. They can also go to http://gst.customs .gov.my."
