More evacuated in flood-hit Perak

KUALA LUMPUR: More people had been evacuated in Perak due to the floods while the situation in flood-hit Terengganu and Melaka remained largely unchanged as of Wednesday morning. The number of evacuees at the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Changkat Jong near Teluk Intan in Perak rose to 325 as at 8 am, up from 310 last night, according to Hilir Perak Department of Civil Defence officer Mohd Fazly Mohamad Zawawi. He said the evacuees were from 97 families and comprised 78 men, 103 women, 71 boys, 57 girls and 16 infants.

They were from four areas, namely Lorong Mesra at Batu 7; Lorong Kedah at Batu 8; Lorong Setia at Batu 11 and Kampung Batu 9, he added. The recent floods are the second to strike Changkat Jong in two weeks, with Sungai Bidor bursting its banks. On Nov 14, fifty-six people from 16 families in Lorong Mesra were evacuated when the river overflowed following heavy rain. They returned to their homes four days later after the floodwaters receded. In TERENGGANU, the number of evacuees at the relief centre at Sekolah Kebangsaan Kompleks Gong Badak in Kuala Terengganu dropped to 234 this morning compared to 247 last night, according to the Terengganu National Security Council portal.

In MELAKA, 14 evacuees still remained at the community hall of Kampung Pulau, Durian Tunggal, near Alor Gajah. They were from four families from the village, said Melaka National Security Council assistant secretary Jafri Mohamed.
