Local duo get 14 years, cane for robbing woman
KOTA KINABALU: Two local men with several previous convictions were sent to prison for 14 years and ordered given two strokes of the cane for robbing a woman.Sessions Court Judge Azreena Aziz handed the sentence to Ferdenand Felix Jipony and Fernandez D Mathews, both 32, after they were found guilty of robbing one Norhana Fariha Kalong, 28, of her handbag containing three handphones, two handphone back-up batteries and several receipts.

They committed the offence together with an accomplice still at large at 2.30am on July 7, 2013 at a car park in KTV De Boss at Asia City, here.

They were convicted under Section 395 of the Penal Code, which provides for a jail term of up to 20 years and whipping, on conviction.

Azreena also ordered Ferdenand and Fernandez to pay a compensation of RM10,000 in default six months' jail to the victim and another RM10,000 in prosecution cost and if they failed to pay it, serve another six months' jail.

The court ordered them to serve the jail sentence from Friday.

During mitigation, counsel Hendry Gudid asked for a lenient sentence saying both his clients had given full cooperation to the police during the investigation of the case.

However, Deputy Public Prosecutor Dominic Chew urged the court to impose a heavy sentence on the grounds that Ferdenand and Fernandez have several previous convictions.

Chew told the court that they are currently serving sentence for another offence.
