Why big projects to non-Bumis
KOTA KINABALU: Chief Minister Datuk Seri Musa Aman said the State Government should not be blamed for awarding big projects to non-Bumiputera developers who are financially strong and capable of completing projects on time.He said these developers (non-Bumiputera) have good track records of delivering projects in accordance with the schedule.

"Some people are asking why the State Government awarded big projects to the same non-Bumiputera developers. Actually there are not many of them but just one or two that are given big projects and this should not be misconstrued as they are monopolising the sector.

"This is because we look for developers, which happens to be non-Bumiputera, that have strong financial capabilities to bear the cost and deliver the projects within the required period of time," he said when opening the Sabah Bumiputera Chamber of Commerce's (DPBS) 20th AGM at Tabung Haji Hotel, here, Sunday.

Musa, who is also State Finance Minister and DPBS' patron, also presented the 'Aspired Entrepreneur Award' to seven Bumiputera entrepreneurs in various fields of business operations.

He also reminded Bumputera contractors and entrepreneurs to carry out by themselves the projects given to them instead of farming them out to other contractors as an easy way to make profit or earn commission.

He said such an attitude would actually not benefit Bumiputera contractors in the long run in terms of experience and know-how, and also deviated from the Government's aspiration of producing capable, successful and respected Bumiputera contractors and entrepreneurs.

On the oil and gas industry, Musa said the State Government wanted Petronas to give priority to local contractors in the awarding of contracts involving the national petroleum company's oil and gas projects.

He said if there were work in the oil and gas upstream and downstream sectors that could be carried out by local contractors or entrepreneurs, the contracts should be given to them.

"Of course, contracts have been given to local contractors all this while but there should be more," he said.

He admitted it was not easy to be successful in the oil and gas business but not impossible for local contractors, particularly the Bumiputeras, to achieve that through hard work and perseverance.

He also said that Prime Minister Datuk Seri Najib Tun Razak had agreed that Class F contractors be given the opportunity to participate in projects to build affordable houses.

With that, there would be more work opportunities for Class F contractors in Sabah and no longer monopolised by certain companies only, he added.

Also present was DPBS President Datuk Mohd Hasnol Datuk Ayub who won the post uncontested, while Datuk Nazri Abdullah is the new Vice-President of DPBS.
