Petronas and Gallery hold outreach programme

KOTA KINABALU: Petronas in collaboration with the Sabah Art Gallery, recently organised an outreach programme aimed at promoting art and science to the Sabahan public, particularly students.Held from Dec 4 to 5, the outreach programme was in conjunction with the on-going "Pertumpuan: Senusa Sejiwa" art exhibition, organised by Galeri Petronas, which showcased 30 selected artworks from the Petronas Art Collection.Among the activities held during the two-day programme were mural painting workshops, Orang Asli craft workshop and demonstration, a folk art workshop and demonstration, as well as a Naïve Art workshop and expressionism dance performances. Present were Petronas Sabah and Labuan Regional Office General Manager Julita Ontol, and Galeri Petronas Special Programme Manager Shuryati Datuk Shuaib.

One of the highlights was a curatorial walkthrough of the art exhibition which aimed at educating students and the public on the cultural, historical, landscape, spiritual and contemporary aspects of the Petronas Art Collection, thus inspiring them to learn from prolific and renowned local artists whose works were showcased at the exhibition.It exhibited famous Sabahan artists such as "Iraga Sesauk (2007)" by Awang Damit Ahmad, as well as "Kinabalu Series: Huminodun (2007)" and "Kinabalu Series: Anak Negeri (2007)" by Yee I-Lann. Meanwhile, the "Pertumpuan: Senusa Sejiwa" exhibition also showcased artworks by prominent artists such as Yeo Suh Chan, Bangie a/k Embol, Raphael Scott Ahbeng and Tsai Horng Chung, Dato' Sharifah Fatimah Syed Zubir, the late Dato' Syed Ahmad Jamal, Ivan Lam, Johan Marjonid, Yong Mun Sen, Haron Mokhtar and Nadiah Bamadhaj.The exhibition is currently open for the public from September until 31 December and is jointly curated by South East Asian modern and contemporary art historian and writer, Shireen Naziree and the Petronas Art Collection Unit.
