KUALA LUMPUR: Malay non-governmental organisations (NGO) under the Malay Consultative Council (MPM) and Pertubuhan Pemikir Agenda Watan Malaysia (Pemikir) have called on the government to change the status of all undeveloped government-owned land in the city to Malay reserve land. According to MPM secretary-general of MPM, Datuk Dr Hasan Mad, Bumiputera's property ownership had deteriorated over the years to the extent of seeing an obvious gap in land ownership between Bumiputera and non-Bumiputera.

"We have to look into this and understand that Kuala Lumpur is the federal capital of Malaysia, a multi-racial country. So, the development of Kuala Lumpur must reflect the composition of this multi-racial society.

"Today, there exists a disparity between the races. If this trend continues, Kuala Lumpur will not reflect the federal capital of Malaysia," he said.

Hasan said MPM had yet to receive any definite answer about the percentage or the actual size of land categorised as Malay reserve land in Kuala Lumpur.

"In October, we've asked the city mayor about the matter, but he was not so sure about the statistics," he said.

Meanwhile, MPM Constitution Bureau chairman Tan Sri Abdul Aziz Abdul Rahman, who is also Pemikir Supreme Council member, said the change of the land status must be implemented to safeguard the rights of each race.

"Many developments are taking place in the city and we found that there is an imbalance in terms of racial composition of the city dwellers. If left unaddressed, it will become a threat to peace.

"We do not want to touch on the land that had been developed, we are not trying to seize any property, we just want the status of undeveloped government-owned land to be changed to Malay reserve land and that's it," he added. – Bernama
