KUALA LUMPUR: Animation artists and cartoonists are urged to increase their works which depict Malaysian rural life for the international audience.Social and Cultural Affairs Advisor to the Government Tan Sri Dr Rais Yatim said such works like those by famed cartoonist Lat through his 'Kampung Boy' cartoons could be a medium to promote the uniqueness and harmony of the plural society here.

"The twin cartoon characters Upin and Ipin also show life in the villages but nobody is bored by their many antics.

"We need to have more animation works like that so that when people see them, they know it is our work," he said.

Although these animation pieces portray village life, Rais said they should have commercial value so that they are not rejected by local and international audiences.

He was commenting on the international recognition given to Lat, real name Datuk Mohd Nor Khalid, whose comic series 'Kampung Boy' was translated into Japanese recently.

'Kampung Boy' won second place in Japan's Gaiman Award in the foreign comics category, beating off entries from other nations such as United Kingdom, Spain, China and South Korea.

Meanwhile, President of the Animation Society of Malaysia, Kamn Ismail said comics were no longer 'cheap' reading materials but were now considered an informal medium of information transfer.

"Although comics use simple language, most of it is packed with positive messages and caricatures which attract the attention of the readers," he said.
