PASIR MAS: "I feel that night was just like a tsunami attack," said a 47-year-old woman, who wished to be known as Atiya, while commenting on the daunting situation she faced at her home in Rantau Panjang when it was hit by floods last Thursday. She said although she, her husband and four children managed to save themselves, however their belongings, especially electrical appliances, furniture, and beds were almost all spoilt due to the flash flood.

Describing it as the worst disaster to occur since 1969, Atiya said, they were lucky as her husband Wan Daud Wan Salleh had begun taking action as soon as the rain started pouring.

"As soon as my husband woke me up, I rushed my kids through the rapid waters and heavy rain into our car which was parked at the side of a road as a precautionary measure.

"The water level rose fast as even before we could leave the house, the water had reached just below the knees," she said when met in front of her house here, Monday.

The most fretful thing for Atiya, who ran a shop making false teeth in Rantau Panjang was that all her business equipment had been spoilt, affecting her source of income.

Even more disheartening is the condition of their house, which had been renovated earlier to accommodate their business.

"I really regret this because we had been running this business for a long time...almost 15 years. A lot of people including those from outside of Rantau Panjang had also become our regular customers," she said.

Pasir Mas is still the worst hit district in Kelantan in terms of victims, with 11,755 in total placed in 33 relief centres as of 4pm Sunday.

A temporary relief centre in Sekolah Kebangsaan Sri Rantau Panjang Dua had the most number of victims recorded with 632 families consisting of 1,696 individuals.

An observation by Bernama on the way to Rantau Panajang found that there were still many villages and light vehicles which were drowned in water in low-lying areas since last Thursday.

Vibrant business activities in Rantau Panjang, which was a tax-free zone was also affected with many premises filled with water.

For crockery and glass showpiece trader who wished to be called Gan, the floods this time were very bad and he expected his shop to be flooded for the third time now.

Even though his business had been affected due to the flood, Gan said, he was well prepared as he had already insured everything.

"The flood this time was bad, but I already have insurance. I sympathise with those who are running clothes businesses, as once their goods get wet, it would definitely get spoilt," he said. – Bernama
