Music as a gift, way to express feelings
JOHOR BARU: Christmas is a season of joy. For some, it is a season to give back to the community. For some 20 young musicians from the Malaysian Philharmonic Youth Orchestra (MPYO), their way of doing it is through a special live music performance for the underprivileged.

The MPYO Tour and Outreach Programme is an annual event that allows its young talents to share their love of music with community groups and students through live performances and demonstrations.

The programme also encourages other aspiring young musicians to join the orchestra's pool of well-trained Malaysian instrumentalists, community and professional performers, teachers and inspired amateurs.

MPYO Head Ahmad Muriz Che Rose said the outreach programme was usually dedicated for charity homes for those with special needs and old folks.

"This is a programme that we look forward to every year. The experience is always a heartwrenching one, and leaves us more grounded and thoughtful. Yet, at the same time, it inspires and energizes us," he said.

EduCity Iskandar Malaysia Sdn Bhd Managing Director Joanne Jacinta Oei said the young musicians were highly talented.

"We hope the orchestra's passion and love for music will inspire the youths in the region, including EduCity students," she said.

EduCity Iskandar Malaysia is the host for the Johor leg of the MPYO's Tour and Outreach Programme, which was held at the EduCity Sports Complex recently.

MPYO is currently regarded as the best youth orchestra in the country and features the brightest of local youths and musicians with the ability to deliver world-class repertoire, tapping into different styles and range of music.

Founded in 2006, the orchestra held the tour and outreach programme as their additional platform for musicians to be exposed to various genres of music, ranging from Malay traditional to pop classical music.

During the Johor leg, audiences were awed by their series of performance through the string quartet and jazz quintet, playing classical and popular songs like "Kau Ilhamku" and Rude. – Bernama
